How to create new course sections

Course sections are where you set up specific offerings of a course, including information like the instructor, meeting times, location, and enrollment capacity. Here's how to create new sections in the DualEnroll system.

Accessing the New Section Screen

  1. Go to the Courses tab
  2. Click on the course number or name for which you want to add a section
  3. Choose Course Sections from the menu on the right
  4. Click the ADD button to create a new section from scratch

Alternatively, you can clone an existing section:

  1. Click into an existing section
  2. Choose CLONE to duplicate most of the section information
  3. Select a new Term when prompted

Required Fields

When creating a new section, the following fields are required:

  • Section Number
  • Term
  • Format

Course Section Fields

Complete the section details by filling in these fields:

Basic Information

  • Section Title: Name of the section (may have alternate use for some colleges)
  • Section Number: SIS section number
  • Section Alt Number: GUID or other internal ID for the section
  • Section Description: Description of the section (may have alternate use for some colleges)
  • Instructor: Name of instructor
  • Instructor Type: High School or College
  • Location: College Campus, High School, Online, Regional Center
  • Term: Select from term list
  • Start Date: Section start date
  • End Date: Section end date

Configuration Options

  • Allow Registration: Check to make the section available for registration
  • Wish List Only: Creates a placeholder for actual sections to be created later
  • Override Instructor Approval with Counselor: For workflows that send student approval steps to instructors, check if approvals should always go to the counselor instead
  • Exclude from Surveys: If surveys are used, check to exclude this section
  • Campus: If your college has multiple campuses, select the appropriate campus for sections taught at the college

Location Settings

  • Taught at High School: Select the high school where the section is taught
  • Allow High Schools: If left blank, all high schools will be able to see and register for the section. To restrict visibility, check off one or more high schools from the list

Course Section Meetings

  • Format: Choose from Lecture, Lab, Face-to-face, Blended/Hybrid, Fully Online, Remote, CCTV, LVL (Live Virtual Learning), or Synchronous Learning
  • Bldg: Building
  • Room: Room number
  • Days: Days of the week the class meets
  • Start/End Time: Meeting times

Enrollment Settings

  • Register as Group: Allows section to act as a container for multiple course sections
  • Student Capacity: Maximum number of students allowed in the section
  • Check Capacity: When selected, DualEnroll will make the section unavailable once enrollment reaches capacity

Register as Group Feature

The Register as Group feature allows the section being created to act as a container for multiple course sections. Common uses include:

  • Lecture/lab combinations
  • Sequential fall/spring courses where students register for both terms up front
  • Academies where a group of courses are treated as a unit

To configure this:

  • Course #: The course number
  • Term Code: The internal code for the term
  • Section #: The section number
  • Section Alt #: The alt section number, if applicable
  • Launch Group as Registrations: If checked, each registration in the course group will be launched as a separate workflow

Additional Section Options

Course Fees

  1. Click on the course section to be edited
  2. Click ADD next to Course Fees
  3. Select the Fee Type from the dropdown menu
  4. Enter the fee amount
  5. Click CREATE

Action Dates

Action dates are section-level dates for things like section-specific drop windows, census dates, or payment deadlines.

After Creating a Section

After creating a section, it will appear in the Course Sections list for the course. Students will be able to see and register for the section if:

  1. Registration is allowed for the section
  2. The student's high school is either in the "Allow High Schools" list or all high schools are allowed
  3. Registration capacity has not been reached (if Check Capacity is enabled)

Notes

  • Sections are normally created via API from your student system or through file upload. If you find yourself commonly creating sections manually, consult your implementation manager to determine if the process can be automated for future consistency.
  • All sections must be associated with a course and a term
  • Course fees can vary by section
