How to Set Up Feeder High Schools
Feeder High Schools allow students from one high school to view and register for courses offered at another, feeder, high school. This article explains why and how to set up feeder high schools for your registrations.
What are Feeder High Schools?
Feeder high schools are schools whose students are automatically allowed to register for courses taught at another designated high school. When you set up a feeder school relationship, students from the feeder school can see and register for courses at the destination school without requiring additional configuration.
Common Use Cases
Regional centers or career centers that serve multiple high schools are the most common use case for feeder schools. For example, if you have a technical education center that offers courses to students from several nearby high schools, you can set those schools as feeders to the technical center.
How to Set Up Feeder High Schools
- Navigate to the Admin tab
- Click on High Schools under Profile Options
- Click the name of the high school that will be receiving students (the destination school)
- Scroll to the Feeder High Schools section
- Click the ADD button
- Select the high school you want to designate as a feeder from the dropdown menu
- Click ADD to confirm
To remove a feeder relationship:
- Locate the feeder school in the list
- Click the DELETE button next to its name
Important Notes
- A high school must already be in your system before it can be designated as a feeder school
- Removing a feeder school relationship does NOT automatically update existing course sections
- If you remove a feeder relationship, you'll need to manually update the "Allow High Schools" settings for any existing course sections if you want to restrict access
- There is no limit to how many feeder schools can be assigned to a destination school
- A school can be both a destination school receiving students and a feeder school sending students to other locations
Best Practices
- Review feeder school relationships annually to ensure they reflect current agreements between schools
- When setting up new course sections at schools with feeders, verify that the registrations are working as expected for both the host school and feeder school students
- Consider creating high school groups instead of feeder relationships if you need more flexible or temporary sharing arrangements
