How to Assign High Schools to Specific Course Sections
This guide explains how to control and inspect which high schools can access specific course sections in DualEnroll, including the differences between "Taught At" and "Allowed At" settings.
Understanding High School Settings for Sections
There are two key settings that control high school access to course sections:
- Taught At High School: Indicates where the course is physically taught.
- Allow High Schools: Controls which high schools' students can register for the section.
These settings work independently from the Location field. It is possible for a section to be located on the college campus or online, but still be assigned to an exclusive list of high schools.
In most cases, this assignment will be handled automatically by our course import process, based on matching the High School's Site Code with the Course HS ID saved in DualEnroll.com. If you want to set up a relationship where students from one school can always see sections from another school, you can set up Feeder High School relationships.
Accessing Section Settings
- Navigate to the Courses tab in your DualEnroll account.
- Find the course you want to manage by searching or filtering the list.
- Click on the course name or number to open the course details.
- Select Course Sections from the menu on the right side of the page.
- Either:
- Click on an existing section to edit it, or
- Click the ADD button to create a new section
Setting the "Taught At High School"
This setting indicates the physical location where the course is taught:
- In the section edit screen, look for the Taught at High School dropdown.
- Select the high school where the course will be taught.
- This is only for informational purposes and does not control who can register.
- Leave this blank for courses taught online or on the college campus.
Controlling Registration with "Allow High Schools"
This critical setting determines which high schools' students can register for the section:
- Find the Allow High Schools section (usually toward the bottom of the form).
- Important: If left completely blank (no high schools selected), ALL high schools will be able to see and register for this section.
- To restrict access to specific high schools:
- Check the boxes next to the high schools you want to allow
- Only students from these selected high schools will be able to register
- Any high schools not checked will not see this section when browsing courses.
How "Location" Impacts High School Settings
The Location field does not automatically control high school access:
- A section with Location set to "College Campus" or "Online" can still be restricted to specific high schools using the Allow High Schools setting.
- Similarly, a section with Location set to "High School" will still be visible to ALL high schools unless you restrict it using Allow High Schools.
- Location is primarily used for informational purposes and filtering in the course finder.
Best Practices
- For courses taught at a single high school and only available to that school's students:
- Set "Taught at High School" to the specific high school
- Check only that same high school in "Allow High Schools"
- For courses taught on your campus but only available to certain high schools:
- Set "Location" to "College Campus"
- Check only the permitted high schools in "Allow High Schools"
- For courses available to all students:
- Set the appropriate "Location"
- Leave "Allow High Schools" completely blank
- Always verify your settings by checking how courses appear in the student course finder for different high schools
Important Notes
- Changes take effect immediately after saving. Registrations already in progress will be unaffected.
- If you're using Feeder High Schools, the feeder schools will automatically be granted access to courses taught at their parent high school
- Always click UPDATE or CREATE to save your changes
